equivalent conductance
Firstly it was proposed by w.h. kohlrausch. The conductance power of metallic conductor can be compared by their specific conductance . But in case of electrolyte this is not suitable because the conductivity also depends on concentration of electrolyte . Hence for the comparision of conductivity in electrolyte it is necessary to take the solution of equivalent concentration that is their equivalent weight.
The term equivalent conductance is frequently used in case of electrolyte. It is defined as the conductance ofthe ions produced by dissociation of 1gm equivalent of an electrolyte dissolved in certain volume of solvent at constant temperature.
RELATION BETWEEN SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE AND EQUIVALENT CONDUCTANCE;- When 1gm of equivalent conductance is dissolved in 1cc the conductance offered is called equivalent conductance.
Since the volume is 1cc. Therefore the conductance measured is also called specific conductance.
Conductance=Equivalent conductance=Specific conductance
Suppose the solution is now diluted to 12cc the conductance of the solution will be 12times of its specific conductance. Since one gram equivalent is dissolved the measured conductance is called equivalent conductance.
Where v is the volume in cc containing 1gm equivalent of an electrolyte in 1000cc.If c is the concentration of electrolyte when
v=1000/c
